LACT-AID
Celebrates 25th Anniversary
Establishes virtual headquarters on the
world wide web
August 1, 1996: Athens, Tennessee: -- Lact-Aid International,
Inc. today announced the launching of www.Lact-Aid.com, the new
virtual headquarters of Lact-Aid Internaional, Inc., in
celebration of Lact-Aid's 25th Anniversary Year for their Lact-AidŽ Nursing Trainer System,
"the original breastfeeding
supplementer and suckling aid" .
1971-1996. The entry into cyber media is Lact-Aid's venture into
the world of online communications. According to Ms Jimmie Lynne
Avery, Executive Director of Lact-Aid,
"We are excited about the reorgannizing underway at
Lact-Aid, and we see our new online headquarters as the
embodiment of what our name has come to represent. Because
of the excellent track record we have established for our
Lact-AidŽ name parents and health professionals alike know
that Lact-Aid Means Breastfeeding
Support! ! First, we are redirecting
our existing breastfeeding support products, services, and
publications to improve our outreach and availability to the
expectant and new parents and to the professionals in
maternal and child health." They include the lactation
consultants, birth educators, doctors, nurses, midwives and
nutritionists who teach and counsel nursing mothers. And even
more exciting, it give us an dynamic medium to develop
entirely new approaches to helping families enjoy more
positive breastfeeding experiences."
Lact-Aid is best known for their Real LACT-AIDŽ Brand
NursingTrainer line of breastfeeding
supplementers and related supplies. The Lact-AidŽ NursingTrainer
System is a breastfeeding supplementer, tube-feeding system
that was created "for mothers who worry about low milk
supply", in order to provide
supplemental nutrition to Baby at the breast without bottles. It
may be used when milk supply is insufficient; to retrain suckling
when Baby has weak or poorly coordinated suckling skill; to begin
breastfeeding when it is delayed by premature birth, maternal or
infant illness; and to resume breastfeeding or to relactate when
untimely or temporary weaning occurs. It is even used to nurse
adopted babies, in order to share the bonding benefits of
nurturing baby at the breast. It was invented by John R. Avery,
and the methodology for its use was developed by his wife, Jimmie
Lynne Scholl Avery, now Executive Director of Lact-Aid, and often
referred to by clients as "the Lact-Aid Lady".
Because of their intense dedication to infant safety, the
Avery's conducted careful research and testing for three years,
among several hundred mothers and babies, before starting
manufacturing and launching the Lact-AidŽ System publicly in
1971. Consequently, for a quarter of a century, most books on
breastfeeding and related topics published between 1971 and 1996,
plus countless articles in both parent oriented and medical
literature describe, and recommend the LactAidŽ NursingTrainer
System by name. The Avery's are proud that their dedication to
excellence has established for the Lact-Aid name a track record
of proved performance and safety and earned the recognition of
authors who write about breastfeeding and health professional who
prescribe its use.
Described in its most simple terms, the Lact-AidŽ Nursing
Trainer Unit is the heart of the Lact-AidŽ
System. It is a discreetly compact feeding-tube device enabling
Mother to supplement Baby at the breast, thus eliminating the
need for bottles. It incorporates a precision molded plug
assembly with an attached very soft, narrow nursing tube. A
shorter thicker tube extends into the container, which is a soft,
flexible, disposable nursing bag. (Or a nursing bottle, with the
new Lact-AidŽ Nursing STARTrainer Unit). The
entire assembled NursingTrainer Unit, filled with
supplemental formula or other liquid is then attached to an
adjustable neck strap, and worn discreetly between the mother's
breasts, under her blouse. Baby suckles the tip of the nursing
tube while also suckling the breast.
"Lact-AidŽ NursingTrainer System was
created to assist in overcoming breastfeeding problems from
several perspectives," explains Ms Avery, "First, it
assures adequate nutrition for the infant who has failed to gain,
or is at risk of losing weight while breastfeeding without
supplements. Secondly, it provides a means to get baby to accept
the breast and continue suckling, despite inadequate or no milk
supply. Third, should the problem be related to the infant's
suckling, Lact-AidŽ NursingTrainer provides an
oral physical therapy to retrain suckling reflexes in sequence,
rhythm, pattern and frequency. And finally, as a consequence of
better suckling, and fewer or no bottles, improved breast
stimulation promotes milk ejection and increased milk supply. As
problems resolve, mother and baby graduate from its use."
A high point of their 25th Anniversary year, is the
development of new Lact-Aid brand breastfeeding and breast care
products. One of the hot new items due for release later this
year is the Lact-AidŽ STARTrainer
Nursing System. This new "starter"
product was developed by Lact-Aid especially for use when Baby
needs assistance latching on the breast, or anytime supplementing
is needed for just a brief period, or a trial period is desired,
or a semi-disposable unit is needed.
Also due for release about the same time, is Lact-Aid's new
hot/cold breast therapy packs. Manufactured for Lact-Aid by PI
Medical, the packs may be used to for normal breast engorgment
when milk is "coming in" following childbirth, to
assist milk letdown before breastfeeding or breast pumping.
It can also be used for managing more severe breast
engorgement, premenstrual breast tenderness, and post biopsy or
post surgery pain. Lact-Aid has been providing technical
assistance in the research and design of the product. According
to Jimmie Avery, "We have always been very careful about
maintaining our track record excellence associated with products
bearing the Lact-Aid name. Our new STARTrainer(tm) Nursing
System, and our hot/cold breast therapy packs will continue that
tradition."
Lact-Aid is also developing revised, and new, updated material
on breastfeeding and related topics. Via the The Lact-Aid Library.
It will feature the Lact-Aid Bookstore, where parents and
health professionals will be able to purchase publications. And, Lact-Aid
